Making of O Vennila
Recently I did a music video. It was a great experience doing that.
First of all, choosing the song for the video was the first question I had to put forth to myself. Since I love the music compositions of a lot of composers, I had to put in a few more criteria. I knew I was serious about it and so thought I had to get highly professional co artists, and that meant I had some cost involved. Since I was quite constrained by finance, I restricted to have a single co artist. And I felt it was obvious that I would need the support of a keyboard synthesizer if not anything else. That gave me a hint on the type of song I could do. A song with minimal percussion.
I had heard quite a few songs from A. R. Rahman that had very less percussion, but still extremely wonderful. The songs that came to my mind were O Vennila from Kadhal Desam, Tendrale Tendrale again from Kadhal Desam, Rasatti from Thiruda Thiruda, En kathale from Duet, Dheemi Dheemi, eeshwar allah from 1947 earth, en mel vizhuntha mazhai thuliye from May maadam and some more.
I then thought I had to learn a few of them, and record them in a professional studio. I decided to make a YouTube playlist of the songs I wanted to do and decided to play them and listen to them during my travel to office. I found later that that was the best thing that happened to me in the recent past, because it simply changed my, otherwise boring, irritating and tiring journey to a pleasant, happy and longing for more kind of a journey. Just in case, you are interested, the playlist can be accessed here.
Once I got a good hold on the songs, I decided to book the artist and the studio. For the support from synthesizer, I approached Mr. Vishak Ramaprasad and decided to go with Parekh studio in Bangalore. Since I did not have much experience doing film songs in studio, I had decided to have an open mind on any kind of a situation. I had finalized and prepared for six songs, namely O Vennila from Kadhal Desam, Tendrale Tendrale again from Kadhal Desam, Rasatti from Thiruda Thiruda, En kathale from Duet, Dheemi Dheemi from 1947 earth, en mel vizhuntha mazhai thuliye from May maadam.
In Parekh studio I met Mr. Satheesh, the sound engineer working for Parekh studio. It was a wonderful experience working with him. In general, all the sound engineers I have worked till date are awesome. They are so quick in executing ideas and suggesting the best possibilities. All my earlier experiences were for recording music in the Carnatic Classical genre. Since this was for film music, I felt it very special experience. Vishak is a acclaimed artist. His fingers give a magical touch on the synthesizer and you can listen to that in the recordings that happened.
Being the first experience, I was not able to do the entire set of six songs. There were lot of things I learned in that experience. I hope to improve in my future recording sessions. I was able to do four songs. Also, to put it on YouTube, I thought that a good video content would help. So, I had to decide on how to go about it. As I already said, I did not have good finance to do much because I had already spent some good amount on the recording.
The questions I had to answer were, who would shoot the video? What would be the camera I could afford? What kind of post processing would have to be done? Where would I do the video? Like an answer from the cosmic, my co brother, K. S. Girish, called me at the right time and I simply discussed the idea with him. The location was decided, Mahaveer Riviera apartment complex. Camera - iPhone 7+. Camera works by Girish himself. And for post processing of video, I had purchased quite some time earlier a licence of power director; so, I would do the post processing in my home laptop!
My sincere thanks to Girish for the patience he showed during the video recording. His Bose speakers did a magical work in helping the video to audio synchronization. Some more people need to be thanked. Very importantly my wife Suma, because, if she had not put her foot down and pushed for the video recording, it would have taken a much longer time for the YouTube publish to become a reality. My violin looks so beautiful, only because of the sincere effort of Pritesh. I think Pritesh could write a post on her experience doing that art work. And thanks to all my relatives and friends, the video has already crossed 500 hits in less than a span of 5 hard working days!
